## When does online care need an in-person visit?

The Federation of State Medical Boards is that national group. Its guidance says care given online must be just as thorough as care given in person.

Its guidance checked September 17, 2026 says a doctor should arrange in-person care when an exam or further test is needed.

This advice is for the state boards that oversee doctors. Each state decides the rules for doctors treating patients there.

Ask how an in-person visit would be arranged and what records you would receive. Then ask what the online service would charge after sending you for that visit.
